"I thought about leaving something behind...something for my children and grandchildren to remember me by. Journals begun and forgotten - how does a mother of three find time to keep them up anyways? Then it occurred to me. My photographs speak of me, they are words unspoken, voices and emotion. They are my legacy, and they will be the testament of my life..as a mother, a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter, a friend. A tribute to the lives of those who touched me most, to those I have lost but who are alive in my heart. A tribute to life, and capturing the spirit of love in every respect. My photographs speak the volumes of my soul."

A tribute to my childhood babysitter, friend and beautiful bride ~ Lucy.

As kids, my brothers and I weren't left with a babysitter much. Actually, it scarcely ever happened. My parents immigrated from Italy, and they grew up much differently. The village raised the child, but to appoint a specific someone to watch your little ones while you were away? Just didn't happen.

But one year, Mom fell ill. Hospitalized, she needed someone to watch over her three children during a very trying time for both her and my father. So there was Lucy.

Our families were solid friends. And my brothers and I loved going to their place. We'd get pretty ecstatic about going there actually. We knew the fun that we would experience with Lucy and her sister Toni, and when we were at their home we never wanted to leave.

So my mother and father reached out and sought their help in watching over us. We were anxious, afraid of our mother's condition and many tears were shed. I, being the oldest, put on the strong front to be a support to my brothers. But Lucy and her family knew when I needed to be by my mom's side too, and I appreciated that.

Yet what I remember the most isn't the sadness or the fear. I remember the fun, the laughs that we always had with our beloved friends - with Lucy. Her smile could transform a horrible day into a great one. Lucy, our babysitter, was the funnest girl on earth, and her laugh carried us through.

I was the photographer for my babysitter's wedding just a few weeks ago. And as I experienced her joy alongside her, I caught her laugh. Her huge smile. And it brought me back to those childhood moments I will cherish always.

Recently, I had the wonderful privilege of photographing the absolutely lovely Jill Promoli of Jill Promoli Photography and her husband, Craig. Even though Jill and I are both photographers, we had never met prior. So when Jill contacted me to do her maternity session, I was flattered and a tad anxious, but after meeting these two, I was quickly put at ease! Jill is a stunning, glowing woman and both her and Craig are such easy-going people!

We met at High Park in Toronto, Ontario. And from there, our session began, and the love Jill and Craig shared for each other and their wee one became more and more apparent with each snap I took...

My backyard is on fire. Golds, reds, and flaming orange. Leaves scattered confetti-like on the garage roof and across the boys' trampoline. With my coffee in hand, I peered through the window at this gorgeous backdrop and realized that I woke up to a beautiful, warm autumn day. I wanted to remember it.

"But we're in our PYJAMAS!!", the boys hollered at me.

"Well, so what? Let's go, pyjamas, bedhead and all!" I grabbed the cam and we ran outside. I already know we are the noisiest family on the block. This morning we were noisier. Throwing leaves, boys created piles of it for them to jump off trampoline into. Poko digging threw them, Miss B hiding under them.

What Love Means..

Today I received a wonderful email from a dear friend. The subject line read "What love means...definitions from children". I was so moved by how these small children perceived love, I felt I needed to share it with everyone! Got me really choked up.

I love love. My business is all about LOVE. Love for family - wife, husband, fiance, fiancee, children, grandchildren, dog, cat, mother, father, grandmother, grandfather - family, people, life. Love is so grand, that I find it hard to describe into words. I think these little boys and girls did an amazing job...

So, here it is...LOVE...from the mouth of babes.

'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore.
So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.'

So here I am, late night blogging again. Life's been crazy busy lately, but extra good - boys starting school (all three full-time *yay!*), my biz is rolling ever forward with a busy summer now behind me and a full October on the way! Weddings, portrait and commercial sessions, did a little 'second shooting' (was a second wedding photographer/assistant) which I always love to do, and.....an exciting 'little' announcement - there may actually be a STUDIO in the very close and foreseeable future...Okay, had to let the cat out of the bag on that one, but hey, anyone who knows me also knows I absolutely stink at keeping surprises! So there you have it!

Each wedding anniversary is a time to reflect on the past, love the present and dream about the future. It is a time to celebrate together - the day a vow was made, the good and bad times endured, and the hope of a million more tomorrows to share with one another.

Karen and John led the way as we trailed through a gorgeous wooded property. Their wooded property, where they plan to build their home together. Sunshine streaming through the trees, wildflowers along the path. The scenery was beautiful, and it was a time to celebrate - their past, present and future.

Leanne & Arnold - Cherry Beach Engagement Session | Toronto Ontario Engagement Photography

Leanne and Arnold's love for one another is apparent on a very natural level. They laugh, they share inside jokes. They spend time at Cherry Beach with their dog and with each other - watching the boats sail by and letting their dog run off leash for a while. They share cherished memories there.

Leanne grew up in rural Ontario and Arnold is from Trinidad. Both of them love teaching - Leanne works and instructs drivers at the TTC and Arnold is an elementary school teacher. Cultures and interests entwined to create an amazing relationship!

About their engagement session: Leanne and Arnold are getting married at the St. Lawrence Hall in Toronto, Ontario and their colour theme is purple. So we tied in purple balloons to compliment their theme and wanted a relaxed, casual feel to the afternoon session. Also it was nice to be at a location where they share many memories, always great for an engagement session!

Is a black & white, a black & white, a black & white?

Happy Monday!

Had some questions recently from some of my clients about editing style and, in specific, black and white photographs. These days most of my clients are opting with a black and white editing style (as opposed to sepia - which is very passe). Black and white is gorgeous, especially in high contrast (a wide range of between the blacks and whites in a photo). Yet a black & white isn't just a black & white. What I mean by that is there is a WHOLE RANGE of black & white styles.

As I process the images from each photo session, I look to see what black & white style would best compliment the client (depending on skin tones, lighting etc.) I don't like to 'flip-flop' between numerous finishes, so here are the basic ones I choose to use, just because I love them!

Keep in mind though, that if you have a personal preference, I am always willing to accomodate! Sometimes, it's just a matter of taste or home decor that dictates what you would like as a black & white option.

So, meet my black & whites. We have....

1.) Simply Black & White.

I call this one 'simply' black & white because, it's my 'basic' type of black & white style. It's pretty classic, and goes with a lot of different skin tones, without compromising the great contrast it has!

2.) Black & White - Rocky Road.

Think a little aged, a little touch of beige maybe..that old worn-out black and white style. I love using this with a texture finish!

3.) Red Velvet Black & White.

I like this one because it has some pretty warm 'reddish raspberry' tones in it. It's also the 'fussiest' black & white I use, because it only looks good on selective skin tones.

4.) Black & White - Truffle.

This is a really pretty one and as the name suggests, it has a lot of chocolate brown undertones in it.

and finally....

5.) Vintage Black & White.

It's got that 60s, Polaroid look. Black & white with a hint of blues and pale, pale taupe.

So there you have it! My black and white family. During the editing process, I play around to make sure the black & white I choose for each of my clients flatter and bring out the mood and theme of the photo session.

From this post I also hope that many realize that being a photographer is not just about shooting, but about creating artwork with each photograph - through lighting, composition and posing as well as creative edits!

I love meeting new friends. Especially ones that are friends of my family already - it seems that after the initial 'hellos' there is a certain level of comfort almost right off the bat. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Marsha, and her two adorable children, baby M and Little Miss L. She and her husband are friends of my brother, who speaks highly of this family! After meeting them, I had no doubt why.

Baby M is the most smiley baby ever, and Little Miss L and I chatted up a storm - in no time at all we were very well acquainted! I absolutely love photographing children, and I had a fun time capturing adorable smiles and bright eyes with the two of them!

Each time I have a children's photography session, I remind everyone that "it is on the child(ren)'s terms". Not only am I a new grown-up that has come to meet them, but I am a grown-up with a huge black camera with me, and this is all new to them. So I go at there pace. I document. I see the world through a child's eyes and what I see is precious and beautiful.

First day of school!

To my amazement, my boys were all up and ready to go this morning at warp speed! Quentin, helping his brothers flatten their 'bedheads' and Harley popping into the kitchen with a "hi Mom!". Blythe crept downstairs in his pjs, but he was the first one down to give me his morning bear hug.

I packed their lunches (following Quentin's advice not to pack too much), and then it was time for the fun part. I had purchased some lunchbox lovenotes from Say Please - and I've been excited to open them all week! They are absolutely adorable! I snuck one in to each of my boys' lunchbags, giggling to myself that I would most likely embarass them because of it - but isn't that what Mommies are supposed to do anyways?

Here is a what is inside each card kit...

And so I am sharing this with all of you Moms and Dads out there who, like me, wrap each sandwich lovingly, wash each apple carefully and pack those lunchbags with a heart full of love. Add a little hug. Pop in a note, even a handwritten one, that just says 'I love you'. They may go beet red in front of their friends, but it's about adding positivity throughout their day when we're not with them to verbally do it.

the last bittersweet day.

It's the last day of summer vacation. Back to school is such a bittersweet deal for me. Sweet, because tomorrow marks the first day that all 3 of my boys are in school FULL-TIME - which makes me giddy with excitement...Sweet, because I actually want the routine and structure back. Bitter, because I simply love summertime, home with my boys, living life in the slow lane. I love thick cable-knit sweaters and walks through fallen leaves, but I also love the sound of lapping waves and the squishiness of sand between my toes.

So here I sit, pondering over tomorrow, a little anxious about how the first day of school will go. And even though my boys are wrestling, yelling and making farting noises in the other room as I type away here, I will miss them when the house seems too quiet tomorrow.

I know many of you parents feel the same. Which leads me to conclude to myself again that parenthood is a tremendously emotional job, the highs and lows, the ups and downs, the pain and the pride.

So back to summer. I took some time to search for some of my favourite photographs of the season to share with you. Summer 2010, you've been a good one!

All the best to all the kiddos out there going back to school tomorrow, and to all the parents who will fuss and fret, seeing them off with a hug and kiss. Enjoy the quiet.

Happy. Excited. Honoured.

Yesterday, I was featured for the first time on two blogs - Sensational Wedding Vendors, for their 'Wordless Wednesday' feature, and on Brenda's Wedding Blog, which featured one of my April wedding's, that of the gorgeous Jay and Kelly.

All I can say is I am happy. I work hard, and although photography is truly my passion, I struggle day to day with the balance of being single Mom who runs her own business and raises three small children. Everyday is a juggling act. Each day you watch and wonder when all the hard work and effort you put into life is going to pay off someday. It does each day in its' own unique ways - even a simple 'thank you Mom' from one of my boys makes everything worth it. As a photographer, it's the same. Each time I get a positive review, a kind word, a couple who beams when they see their wedding images for the first time...it makes the hours I spend - preparing, planning, editing - completely worth it.

So when I heard I was going to be featured for the first time, I was elated! Thank you Jen and Eve, and Brenda for featuring me on your blogs - it was a day to count my blessings and shine!

motherhood.

'Motherhood' is a huge word. MASSIVE. It encompasses so much.

I remember the last day before my eldest son, Quentin, was born. It was hot for March - a crazy 28 degrees C - and I was huge. My belly jutted out and stretched in ways I never EVER deemed imaginable. I waddled. I held my lower back for support. And I was extremely 'antsy'. I decided to take a long walk, to the dry cleaners, and living in Toronto, there was heavy traffic and the sidewalk was very uneven (we lived in an old section of the city). I couldn't see my toes let alone for the divets and cracks in the pavement to avoid, and even though Quentin had dropped low already, the pressure on my diaphragm made it hard to take a deep breath. So as I walked heavily and clumsily home (carrying a stack of clothes from the cleaners) I had time to think. I thought about how much my life was going to change. HUGE, just like my belly. I couldn't wrap my head around what drastic circumstances awaited me. I remember getting teary. And as I stepped into my apartment and collapsed on the couch, I sang to Quentin like I normally did, and told him how much I loved him and couldn't wait to meet him.

He was born the next day. And my life changed forever.

I now have 3 boys. I live life in reverse of what was then. Now I can't imagine my life any other way - I am Mom - it is the greatest honour and title on Earth.

I am a real Mom. I get angry, I blow up. I mess up. I burn dinner, I forget to buy toilet paper (frantically search for kleenex boxes boys!) I embarrass my kids for fun (driving around with a bike helmet when I pick them up from their buddy's place).. I let them spend way too much time on video games at times when I need to edit, I stub my toe and yell out the *poop* word out loud. It's life, it's motherhood, it's real.

Someone near and dear to me told me to check out a slideshow featured on YouTube about motherhood today. The Moms in the video were all asked if they could go back before their first baby, what they would tell themselves. They display their answers. It was awesome and it inspired me. I'd like to share it with you below.

Stories. Who doesn't like a good one? Legends, myths, folklore, tales. My hometown of St.Thomas, I've learned has many. Think of St.T, and think of two things: trains, and Jumbo. Jumbo was an elephant who existed.

"A guy went into a restaurant in St Thomas, Ontario on September 15, 1885. He passed a sign that said that anyone who can order a sandwich that the restaurant cannot supply will get $1000. He sits down, thinking this could be the easiest money he has ever made, and without even looking at the menu, he asks the waiter for an "Elephant Ear on Rye Sandwich". The waiter returns ten minutes later with a check for $1000 and hands it to the guy. The guy says, with a smirk, "Out of Elephant Ears?" "No," replies the waiter, "we are out of rye bread." September 15, 1885 marked the day Jumbo, the "World's Largest Elephant" was struck by an unscheduled express train after a final performance with the smallest elephant, Tom Thumb. Legend has it that Jumbo saved Tom Thumb's life by scooping him up with his trunk and throwing him over the escarpment. Sacrificing himself. Dying with nobility.

Born in Africa in 1861, by 2 years of age, he was exported to France and then to the London Zoo in 1865. His name came from the Swahili word, jumbe, which means "chief". To this day, 'jumbo' is used in English as a synonym to the words "large and enormous". Heard of the term "Jumbo Jet" and "jumbo hot dogs"? Thank Jumbo the Elephant.

Jumbo was sold by the London Zoo in 1882 to the "The Greatest Show on Earth" - the Barnum & Bailey Circus. From New York City, he became known as "the monster" at 12 feet in height and weighing in at 6 tonnes.

A towering monument of Jumbo stands at the top of the escarpment when entering St.Thomas from the west. And the Elgin Museum recently held a Jumbo exhibit.

Circuses nowadays are nothing like what they used to be. Circuses then thrilled the audience, terrified women and children. The world was a much larger place back then - so many more peculiarities and living curiousities to gawk at. At the museum, I was the one gawking, reading creepy headlines, imagining.

Saw the remains of Jumbo - a tiny chunk of shrivelled ear, and what was found in his stomach. I imagined him picking up peanuts with his giant trunk and these tiny objects with it. His tooth, was engraved and capped. His skin was kept and stuffed for viewing at a museum.

Menagerie tents, human clown elephants, hindoo and quiche dwarfs, dog-faced Russian boys, and horses doing everything but talking? Not bad amusement for a day. Animal and human rights these days have certainly tamed circuses down a few notches.
Although the circuses of yesterday are long gone, we have the legends to pass on. And who doesn't love a good legend?

I drive by this building many times a week, it's ark-like structure a true landmark in my town. It has stood there for over 130 years. And it makes me wonder..

I instruct children at the St.Thomas-Elgin Public Arts Centre, a non-profit organization on Talbot Street in St.Thomas, Ontario. We promote art education, host art exhibitions by local, national and international artists, hold special events . I instruct the Shutterbugs program for children ages 8-12, and Photography 2 for children aged 13+.

As residents of the Railway Capital of Canada, we were invited to take a tour of the Canada Southern Railway Museum. As Chris, our tour guide, showed us around what was once a bustling railway station and the headquarters of the Canadian Southern Railway, I was in awe of the architectural elements that still adorn it - its' gabled roof, the heavy cornices, the iron pillars in Italianate style. I pictured the men puffing cigars in the gentleman's parlour, and the ladies and children in the breezeway. I saw the dining room full of hungry passengers, the little boy shining shoes on the railway platform. It felt alive again.

So here are some interesting facts my and my Shutterbugs learned from our tour:

>>Passengers traveling between New York and Chicago could have breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea in the Grand Dining Room. Some who dined here were: Lucille Ball, W.C.Fields, Benny Goodman and Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees to name a few...

>>the St.Thomas railways connected the trains to major U.S. cities such as New York, Buffalo, Detroit and Chicago.

>>Menus were reviewed on the train, the conductor would take orders and send a telegraph to the Station. When the guests arrived, the meals would be ready. The waitresses actually had dormitories upstairs above the kitchen.

>>the Station had a jail (holding cells) for unruly passengers and pickpockets, as well as a barber shop.

So many facts, and as we were toured through the building, which is now being restored to its' former days and funded by The Heritage Canada Foundation, I was in utter amazement. Wedding receptions have already been hosted from its' Grand Dining Room and I can't wait to photograph an event in its' beautiful setting.

We took photographs. Lots of them. My lesson from the class prior to our tour was on architectural photography - focusing on details, patterns and texture. I brought my 50mm and snapped a few.

The photographs of the bird on the door frame was taken in the Grand Dining Room. I lovingly call these pieces "Lucille", because if I believed in reincarnation, I guarantee it was Lucille Ball gracefully perched there, reminiscing. My 'Lucille' series will grace my dining rooms at home.

I learned that skyscrapers come not only in vertical form, but also horizontal as well. The Station's grandeur is not only an accurate description of its' size, but also its' richness of history and character.

This 'horizontal skyscraper' is truly a wonderful place.

Got a message from my sister-in-law Susie one fine day, telling me about a friend at work who was not only leaving the office at
Schulich School of Medecine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario in London, but also that her sweet dog, Daisy, was dying. She asked if I would do a portrait session of the two of them as a surprise gift, and I couldn't have been more honoured to do it.

Daisy is a beautiful little lady. Her big bright brown eyes are gentle and her manner matches her owner's, Laura - quiet and serene. It was a scorching and humid day, and Daisy suffers from a heart condition that is terminal. Every moment with her is precious. That thought never escaped me as I documented her wags, her kisses.

Thanks so much Laura and Susie and most of all, Daisy, for allowing me to dote on you a bit, and capture your sweet face!

I love vintage themes. Traditional photo sessions with a vintage twist. So when Deborah asked if we could set up a family photo session in a vintage theme style, I was all over it!

So I incorporated vintage books, an Eastlake settee parlour set, an old radio, and tried to mimic a 40s look. Found the perfect location on a local railroad with old traincars (I live in the railway capital of Canada!) and we set out for a fun, themed session with the family!

I glance over at my sons and words escape me. Are there words that would accurately describe the amount of gratitude I feel towards these three beautiful boys I call my own? Through the roughest patches of life, they have been my comfort, my definition of 'home'. And what makes it so amazing to me is their innocence. They know how much I love them I'm sure - for them, I wear my heart on my sleeve and not a day goes by where I don't tell them how much they are loved. But to understand the feeling I get when I look at them - in fascination, in appreciation - only after becoming fathers someday will they ever comprehend.

Quentin wrote a list of 'thank yous' to me not so long ago. The last on the list was, "And final thank you for making all your decisions based on us." As a single mother, that meant more to me than he can imagine. Life will always have its' twists and turns, and we have experienced our share. But it was experienced together, and knowing that every decision I made was always ALWAYS based on their happiness, I carried forward. So what can I say about our relationship with each other as a result of it? Well, we laugh together, we shed tears together. We hold hands in silence, we have a communication level second to none. We are happy. We are comfortable and proud of who we are as a family. We are strong.

And so I grabbed my camera one beautiful summer evening, when I saw the golden light was perfect. Perfect light for my perfect boys. We travelled about five minutes to a country meadow we love. And I celebrated them. Their giggles, their smiles, their round eyes, and closeness as brothers. We sang, we told jokes, we watched the sun go down. And through it all, my heart burst with joy...

Client: I love your work, fantastic! But why does custom photography cost so much?

Here is some information that may help you as the client understand what custom photography truly entails. Hope many this insight helpful!

We are living in a digital revolution. Cameras are readily accessible and seem to becoming increasingly more affordable for anyone. Photographers, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulate pixels. Yet this accessibilty and flexibility comes with a price! Factor in the lifespan of a camera, image processing software, the time and effort required to not only take an image properly, but create photographic art.

We all know that you can go to the local Walmart and pay a $1.99 for a print (or whatever other amount they are charging) – and as a client you may be wondering why you are paying much more for an 8x10 print from your photographer? As photographers we hear this from time to time...

To answer this, let's take into account the bigger 'picture' (no pun intended here, I promise!) Let's take into account not only the time it takes to meet with you as a client, but also the time, equipment/software costs, artistic vision, reputation of the professional photographer. Let's not forget to mention also the usual costs of running a legitimate business (insurance, equipment backup, equipment maintenance costs, and of course, the dollars needed each year to pay business taxes..)

Let's discuss:The cost of TIME

Let's first talk about time. You have hired an amazing photographer, who takes photographs you love and envision for yourself. You have chosen a location you would like your photographs to be taken and this photographer is traveling an hour to your destination to photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:

* session prep time (30 mins – 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks, vehicle checks) If it is a wedding session, I start camera and equipment checks 1-2 days prior. No last minute stuff going on!
* one hour travel time TO session
* 15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
* 90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
* one hour travel time FROM session
* 30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
* 30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
* 2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of beautifully, edited images
* 1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
* 2-3 hours time with client (even if this is via email or telephone, for ordering images)
* 1 hour sorting through and checking order
* 30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
* 30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped (trip to postal outlet)
* any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

In this example, the time spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours – dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

Let's talk: the cost of CAMERA GEAR/EQUIPMENT/MAINTENANCE/SOFTWARE.

Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2000-$3000 (and a professional photographer has at least two) there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. Generally, we have several. We have several memory cards, we have backup equipment and storage. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Let's talk: the cost of QUALITY PRINTS.

A good photography lab is essential to a photographer's success. Time and again, clients will grab a disc with all of their beautifully edited, top notch images on them and take them to a budget lab - will not mention names here, but I think we all know what kind I am referring to. You've paid for a session fee, looked your best, you were directed by a photographer who knew the best way/angle to take your photographs. And you are now placing the 'filet mignon' into a doggie dish. We as photographers know that presentation is key here. And if you are seeking quality (we believe this is why you hired a professional photographer to begin with), then work with the labs your photographer also suggests. Yes it may cost more, but isn't quality what you were after to begin with?

Let's talk: the costs of running a photography business.

If we started getting into all the details about this part, we can be here a long time. So to cut to the chase: taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, props, insurance...

APPLES to ORANGES to BANANAS:

Many clients try to compare a professional photographer to the local department store/mall studio chain. These 'chain studios' charge a whopping $9.99 per sheet. So here is the fact - these discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. If you like your photographs to look like the customer before you, and the one before that, a discount chain is the right place to have that. If you are looking for 'personality' in a photograph, a story to tell and remember, this is a job for a portrait journalist aka. professional photographer. (As a sidenote here, these same discount studios who offer 99cent deals will charge much more for their a la carte pricing, or you can pay $9.99 and get 20 photos - of the exact same pose). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait services in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the “loss leader”.

A portrait journalist will capture natural expression, not the 'just say cheese' ones. Children are free to explore, play and interact. Actually, we encourage it.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being well known for quality work and being in demand takes time and skill. We photographers are constant learners, attending workshops, classes, one on one mentoring sessions. These cost time, money and sacrifice. We are taking time out of our already busy schedule to improve our skills in our craft. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography.

We know that one of the most important ways to keep our clients satisfied in our work is by producing quality images, by being dependable, reliable and approachable. It is a skill to make one feel comfortable getting photographed. We deal with a variety of 'subjects' from very young to very old to newly wed, to four-legged and furry. Most importantly, we are passionate about what we do. I think it would be rare to find a passionate department store studio 'camera-clicker', don't you?

I hope this helps many of you understand our work as professional photographers and why custom photography is the better choice. We are in the business of creating photographs that will be cherished now and for generations to come.

Did you know that free spirit photography is the official photographic sponsor of Iron Cupcake London? Well we are! And last Sunday I had the scrumptious pleasure of shooting some pretty sweet subjects..of course, cupcakes!

What in the world, you may ask, is Iron Cupcake? In April of 2008, two challengers went head-to-head (or shall we say spatula to spatula, haha) to a cupcake bakeoff. These cupcake bakeoffs were unlike any other cupcake bakeoff, since the theme of the bakeoff needed to be of a particular 'secret' ingredient. The first ever Iron Cupcake secret ingredient was Wasabi. The idea caught on and spread throughout US and Canada! Iron Cupcake competitions were born. Iron Cupcake is a cupcake competition open to the public. A 'secret ingredient' is announced and each baker must incorporate the secret ingredient theme into there cupcakes. This past cupcake challenge, the secret ingredient was 'flowers'. And wouldn't you know there were violets in cupcakes, lavender in the cupcakes and even cauliflower! Cupcakes are presented in their 'finished state' for competition. And anyone can come out and be an eater and vote for their favourite!

Behind my lens a lot happens. I focus, I hold my breath. I take the shot. I get teary. I laugh out loud. I live in the moment with my bride and groom.

And so it was with Marina and Aldo. A gorgeous tent wedding at the Horseshoe Valley Resort
in Barrie Ontario. The sunshine filled the white tent with sweet golden light as they exchanged vows. And as the sun set behind the hills, there were tears of love and joy as speeches were given, hands were held and embraces were shared. So much love between friends and family. Between Marina and Aldo.

I got teary, I laughed out loud. A momentous day captured and I felt honoured.

An exciting opportunity awaits me! Recently, I sent a proposal to the St.Thomas Elgin Public Art Centre here in my hometown. My proposal was to introduce a photography program for children for the community. Now I am proud to say my proposal has been accepted, and the arts centre is now offering what I called 'Shutterbugs'- a program invested for children to learn the art of photography! I am very excited to not only meet quite a few eager little photographers in the making, but that I am able to support my community and offer something back to it!

This is just another way photography has been and still is a blessing to me!

Shutterbugs will be running for both the summer and fall programs! I will also be teaching full day workshops on PD Days starting this fall.

Thanks to Sherri Howard at STEPAC! Look forward to working together with local artists in the community!

You sometimes hear phrases that begin with 'It seems like just yesterday'. For the past little while now, those 5 words have been playing over and over again in my mind, and it happens each school year as it comes to a close again. This year is particularly epic to me, since it marks an end to a chapter in my life as a mom, my youngest Blythe has completed kindergarten. Including Quentin and Harley, it's been 6 years of kindergarten in total - 6 years of making play-dough for teachers, listening to their little songs, and since kindergarten is essentially, part-time school, it is the end of having one of my little guys at home with me at certain points during the week. It's a milestone in my family, and I will treasure these past 6 years in my heart always.

Yesterday was the last day Blythe and I hung out while Quentin and Harley were in school. We had a date together at McDonald's, sharing conversation and I watched him play. He had his usual (chicken nugget happy meal) and did his usual (make me laugh hysterically). I love this kid. His sweet smile, his little antics, his big blue eyes. So proud of him. This blog is for Blythe, my baby. Congrats on graduating kindergarten! :)

I normally don't tell my kids to smile for every photograph. Blythe is seriously this smiley!

We held hands during lunch..

This morning I took a pic of Blythe as he made his way out the door. I had a heaviness in my heart and lump in my throat...

A little while ago, I hosted a small charity/fundraising event in a local park near my home. I offered family sessions that day for a reduced rate, and proceeds/donations went toward the cause I strongly support, Von Hippel-Lindau Disease, www.vhl.org. May was VHL Awareness Month, and I wanted to make sure I could help out in some way! I had brochures, booklets, wristband and pins available. Some passing by stopped and asked me a few questions, took some information about the cause and even gave a donation towards it. Grateful indeed!

I situated myself at Waterworks Park in my hometown of St.Thomas, and met some wonderful families who had booked a session with me. One such family is the one I'm about to blog about, the Zavitz family.

Becky & Derek:: 'I Do.'

The wind was gale force outside. Sleet, at times, pelted the windows. Becky and her girls were getting ready at the Casablance Winery Inn in Grimsby, Ontario. Despite the weather outside, there was excitement and laughter. The saying goes that "rain brings good luck". If that holds true, Becky and Derek are in for a lifetime of it!

Flowers were embellished with my personal favourite, 'hens & chicks'...

Had many inquiries about where these photographs were taken in Puddicombe. We are inside the vintage train car behind the wine shop. One look through the windows and at the chandeliers...I knew we DEFINITELY had to go in!

Yes it was windy. And brisk. But we were outside!

I don't normally do selective colouring, but this just worked.

I have little boys. I adore little boys. The ringbearer came stocked with Thomas trains and Cars toys. Love.

I LOVE it when the party gets started! Love to experiment, get creative and have fun! All the while watching others have a blast too!

Recently, I asked Becky to take 3 words to describe how she felt about their wedding day and they chose: windy (haha!), fun and happy! Their thoughts now looking back, " it was such an amazing day - and it was so FUN!!!! Despite the crazy weather and the mishaps that happened, we just had a blast. Because we live here in BC we don't get to see the majority of the people there very much - it was so good to see everyone! Lots of people commented to us that night how much fun our wedding was and that really was our top priority when planning it - so it was a good feeling that we pulled it off."

Becky and Derek, you're wedding was absolutely beautiful. We braved the rain and wind and ended up with some amazing shots outside! Thanks to you both for an amazing time and friendship! Happy one month anniversary today! All the best always!

Giggling boys and gurgling brooks. Turtles, sunfish and worms on hooks..

My boys like fishing. Actually, to say that would be an understatement. They love it.
I used to be the one to bait the hooks with the live worms (icky I know), and the boys would shriek and laugh everytime they caught a sunfish, or a bass, or a carp. These days, they are independent, they know what to do. So I pull out my camera and watch them with curiousity. I marvel at their boyishness, and I am grateful that they are just as in love with nature as their mama.

Spent my day today with my toes in the dirt. Love the feel of the warm sunshine on my back and digging up homes for my marigolds, hens n'chicks and assorted herbs.

Tonight, I wanted to celebrate my now finished garden in a different way. Spent the whole day planting, digging and watering...wanted to savour the results of all my hard work.

The Sound of Music Production Shots::Catholic Central High, London Ontario

How much fun was it to capture the dress rehearsal of Catholic Central High's Sound of Music production? Loads! Especially coming from a family where this beautiful movie was cherished and viewed many, MANY times!

The cast was comprised of CCH students and a few public school students. I was completely taken back by the voices everyone had! The singing was amazing, and the acting phenomenal! I think there are going to be some major stars from this school sometime in the future!

When I document the dynamic between the couples I photograph, I learn. I learn about admiration and about love at first sight. I am reminded that love is strong enough to conquer distance and time between two people and that it will bring these two people back to each other with a love much stronger than what it was when they parted ways for a time.

And so it was with Jay & Kelly. High school sweethearts. Shared values and love for friends and family. Strength in love. Conscious and subconscious harmony.

VHL fundraiser event::FAMILY PHOTO DAY AT THE PARK!!

There is a cause I am very passionate about. It is to raise awareness of a disease that has touched my life and the lives of the members of my family personally, Von hippel-Lindau disease. The month of May is VHL (Von hippel-Lindau for short) awareness month, and in lieu of this, free spirit photography is hosting a fundraiser event called FAMILY PHOTO DAY AT THE PARK! It will take place on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 and I am taking bookings for anytime between 11am - 5pm. ALL proceeds and donations will go directly to the VHL Family Alliance, to encourage awareness and to find a cure for VHL. We will have pamphlets, pins, bracelets and information about VHL, and each family will receive a packet as a token of our appreciation for your support!

The photo session is a half hour in length and will include 25 photographs on a disc to be mailed or delivered to you. The photographs will be artistically edited, unmarked and in high-resolution format, ready for printing. It is only $60 for May 29th only.

I hope to see many come out, if not for a photo session, then just to support our cause and receive an information packet!

The London Area Chapter of the Thyroid Foundation of Canada
10th Anniversary
Dinner::Silent Auction::Fashion Show

We, at free spirit photography, had the honour of photographing this wonderful charity's 10th anniversary dinner, auction, fashion show and benefit! There were over 300 in attendance at the Hellenic Community Centre in London, Ontario, to support this cause, and it was very moving to see all of the work by so many volunteers involved!

Via Rail Canadawas the main sponsor for the silent auction..

..along with the Children's Miracle Network and BX93 London..

the London Police Association..

the London Fire Department..

..along with many other sponsors who provided many gifts and donations.

Great grab bags at every seat, again filled with gifts and certificates donated by local vendors..

Dave Collins and Kim Woodbridge from BX93 were the Special Guests and Hosts for the evening, along with fashions by Bonnie Togs, Elizabeth Noel, Sam Buragina, Old Navy, Kingsmill's Ltd., Urban Planet, Ashton's of London, Studio Style, Jones New York, Sharon's of Hyde Park and Collins Formal Wear.

Not only were we hired to take photos for the fashion show and fundraiser, but it was also Barb Cobbe's last year as the President of the London Chapter of the Thyroid Foundation of Canada. The evening had a special double meaning for all present.

It was a privilege to volunteer our time and to make a contribution towards documenting this special event. It was a great opportunity to give back to our community.

Thanks to all the Committee Members of the Thyroid Foundation!

CASTING CALL!

I love dogs. Ours is a Jack Russell Terrier + Pug mix and his name is Poko. He's a true 'simpleton' as I call him, but he's got character galore. We adore him. He can drive us crazy with his antics and bad 'manners'...(hmmm..let's see..he barks at anything/anyone, 2-legged or 4, who dares to cross our walkway...he randomly howls at 3am...picks through the laundry hamper for the smelliest 'item' he can find and 'stows' it away until I happen across it WEEKS later...and for anyone who foresees stopping by for a visit, he loves to greet visitors with a lot of jumping and a good sniff - brace thyself..). But we love him. His presence brings us comfort, he is family, our personal description of "home".

Realizing how important our dogs are to us, and how much value we place on them in our lives..how much they contribute to our emotional and physical well-being even, I am soon to be branching my business to include dogs. Portrait sessions exclusively for them. And I am putting out that casting call for any of you dog owners out there..I am looking to build my portfolio in this area! A few photographs of your canine wonder...for me and for you!

szemenyei family::two and a half

Shannon & I met back last October. We had side by side booths at a London bridal show. Shannon is an amazing Cake Designer for Whimsical Bakery. (After this blog, I seriously recommend checking out their stuff...seriously amazing.) Anyhoo, at the time we met Shannon was barely showing. When I saw her this past Saturday, I saw an adorably large bump...baby boy Szem ~ 33 weeks and getting larger by the day!

Inspiration. As I look up its' meaning in my giant Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, Copyright 1864, I like this description of this word best - '5. To infuse ideas or poetic spirit.' 'To infuse or excite spirit in; to enliven; to animate; to give new life to; to encourage; to invigorate.' The definition of the word is beautiful even.

Do you ever stop and really think about what inspires you? Who inspires you?

I think that from a very young age, I felt inspired easily..I started my collection of antiques when I was 7. My first antiquity came from my uncle, who I remember stooped down low, looked my shy self in the eye and asked me, "Where would you like to go today? I would like to buy you a gift." In his mind, he was probably expecting the toy store, but my answer was the antique shop I saw out in the country on our way to the beach. So, there we went. And he bought me a saloon girl paper fan with geisha girls on it and an antique doll. I still have them and cherish them to this day. They inspire me, and remind me to listen to my authentic self.

As a photographer, I am drawn to things and places that bring out the artistic side of me. I live in a smaller home, am a single mom to 3 boys. As you can imagine, the house is full of toys, crumbs and cat hair. Laundry piled to the ceiling..there isn't a hamper big enough to make it worth my while to get one. The house is messy most days, but well lived in. Loved. So, I chose my 'spot' in my home..it's a section off the living room..but it's mine. My desk, my stuff. The boys know it's sacred to Mom, and don't dare occupy it unless I'm there with them. It's my turf, and as expected, decorated with the little things I love...vintage books, lamps, teacups. If I'm editing and need a little inspiration, I take down one of my vintage poetry books and read. When I'm tired and need a pep, I study a pretty teacup. It gives me the jolt I need.

Point is, I believe inspiration can come from anywhere, from any object big or small. You don't need to travel miles and it definitely doesn't need to be complicated. I probably won't travel far for a while, and the objects I adore and cherish are things I have found in antique shops and flea markets. But they move me. They instill the poetry into my, already, free spirit.
